Backlit Letter Signs: Planning Your Name or Logo Sign
Backlit letter signs spell out your name or logo in separate lit letters that throw a halo onto the wall. Each letter and logo part has its own shell, its own LED, and its own wiring. With the lights off, the sign looks like clean dimensional letters. With the lights on, the halo traces the outline of each piece. This page helps you plan what goes on the sign and the wall it goes on.
What You Can Put on the Sign
A letter sign can carry your wording, your logo, house or suite numbers, or a mix of them. Serif, sans serif, and script fonts all work, and so do non-Latin alphabets. The one limit is space for the LED. Strokes that are too thin or letters that are too small can’t hold it, so we may suggest widening a stroke slightly, and you decide whether to make that change. Send vector artwork and we’ll check every letter before we quote.
A Sign That Looks Right With the Lights On and Off
The face of a backlit letter doesn’t light up, so the finish is what people see when the sign is off. Pick the finish as carefully as the light color. Metal letters come in brushed, mirror-polished, painted, or plated finishes, and acrylic letters come painted.
Planning the Wall
The wall is part of the sign, because the halo shines on it. A few points to check before you order:
- Indoor signs usually don’t need waterproofing, but damp rooms like pool areas and spas do.
- Outdoor signs usually use a metal route, with 316 stainless steel near the coast. Acrylic works outdoors too, and it is best mounted under an awning or canopy, where it lasts longer.
- A wall photo shows us the surface, so we can tell you which route suits that wall. Because the Classic halo is reflected light, its effect depends on how reflective the wall is.
Pick the Route for Your Sign
Start from where the sign lives and the look you want, and the route follows.
- Storefront or building front
- We suggest Luxury or Classic metal, which looks good with the lights on and with the lights off. Under an awning, acrylic is also a good option.
- Indoor reception or lobby
- Acrylic, light and bright up close, or metal Luxury or Classic, are all good options.
- Not sure which
- Send the setting and we’ll point you to the route.
Compare the Three Routes
Luxury and Classic are the metal routes, and acrylic is the lighter route, for indoors or outdoors. The comparison table on this page lines them up side by side.
Luxury, premium flush metal
The bright metal route for premium storefront and lobby signs, with a visible light-transmitting acrylic edge. It lights a wider area and gives a stronger halo. It mounts flush by default and can also mount off the wall, indoors or outdoors.
View Luxury
Classic, from small letters to large letters
The most common backlit sign, with strong weather resistance and wide flexibility in fonts and sizes, from small letters to large letters. It mounts off the wall, and because its halo is reflected light, the effect depends on how reflective the wall is. The overall glow is softer, and it suits indoor and outdoor fronts alike.
Review Classic
Acrylic, light and refined
Backlit acrylic letters use a CNC-engraved shell, so they can take complex custom shapes while staying light, which suits company-name walls where low weight and close-up brightness matter. The face of the acrylic shell, and the sides near the face, are covered with paint or powder coat so light doesn’t leak through there. Light escapes through the unpainted acrylic sides nearest the wall and falls straight onto the wall to form a halo. They work indoors and outdoors. Outdoors, they are best mounted under an awning or canopy, where they last longer.
